A door is never just a door – and certainly not here at Skåbu.

It is a promise that someone is waiting inside. A promise of warmth, of voices, of a fresh cup of coffee on the table and a chair waiting for you.

Old houses and doors from generations in Skåbu

At Skåbu there are many old and beautiful houses. These have been homes for generations, as sturdy as the Norwegian mountains themselves. The doorways are low, requiring a gentle bow as you cross the threshold. As a quiet salute to the home you were entering, or as a protection against the dangers of the night.

The wood is seasoned and dense, softened by generations of hands. On some of the doors, the original paint has gently flaked away in shades of blue, green or reddish brown. Once, these colours sang out against the winter landscape. Now they whisper.
