Reasons to visit Skåbu
Who would have thought that I, an urban girl from Bærum, near Oslo, would settle down in the small mountain village of Skåbu and become a hotelier? Skåbu, of all places?? I hadn't even heard of the place!
The plan was to spend a year with the family and have a type of adventure trip in our own country to experience something completely different and exotic! That was 9 years ago...
Why Skåbu? It's not just the nature and the landscape – it's first and foremost the stories!
Skåbu is full of untold stories: silent tales that lie unspoken in the stone mounds, in the ruins of old houses, in the people I meet at the shop, in the names of trails no tourist map shows, and in the animals we live in a pact with just as our ancestors did for generations. The animals fascinated and excited me from the start, and they still do today.
This is a place that whispers more than it shouts. Every barn, every river, and every mountain road has a story waiting to be told — about families who put down roots generations ago, about weather that shaped their lives, about forgotten traditions and small miracles in everyday life. As hotel hosts, we get to be the bridge between these stories and our guests. This gives our job meaning and our life here depth.
The untold stories make this place come alive. They invite us to listen, learn, and share. I feel like these stories are a part of me, a part of the origins of all of us, a part of our heritage that we will share with future generations. Imagine being a part of all of that. It's a true vision of life!
