Our pigs
Just across the street from Skåbu Fjellhotell lies our farm, Setermoen, where our pigs are kept. They live a good life with plenty of space to roll around in the dirt, bask in the sun and generally live their best life as pigs. We believe that ensuring a dignified existence for livestock yields better ingredients, a belief which we practice every day at Restaurant Skadir.
What makes the circle complete is this: all food waste from our restaurant is transformed into nutritious pig feed. Nothing is thrown away. Instead, what would otherwise be waste becomes food for the pigs, which give us the best raw materials in return. Zero food waste, one hundred percent meaning.
We use every part of the animal, the old-fashioned way. Ham, bacon and sausages are processed according to traditional methods and smoked slowly in our wood-fired smokehouse, as has been done for generations here at Skåbu.
We market our food under our own brand, Skåbu Høyfjellsmat. You can find our products at the reception! Bring home a delicious taste of Skåbu with hams, bacon or sausages, made by us, from our own mountain pigs, right here on our farm.
Would you like to see the pigs? Join us across the street at Setermoen! Our animals love visitors, and you are most welcome to pet and cuddle them. Pigs are extremely social, wise and affectionate animals. If you talk to them, they will oink back happily.
For us, this is about something bigger than a trend: sustainability, self-sufficiency, ethical animal husbandry and local ingredients are not just empty slogans – they are how we operate every single day.
