Skåbu: Named after the ski goddess Skade
Skade was not only the goddess of skiing – she was also the goddess of hunting, winter, mountains and wilderness. She was a Jotun woman (of the giants, jotnene) but later became part of the realm of the gods in Norse mythology.
She once tried to live by the sea, but she missed the mountains, snow and skiing (but not the sea and noisy seagulls' cries).
According to the ancient faith, when you hear the sound of skis gliding across the snow late at night, it is Skade who is out on a journey.
I like to think that she looks after our mountains – and us. We have named our restaurant, Skadir, after her. Honouring Skade for the bounty of the mountains teaches us to take care of the planet and harvest from nature with respect, not only for ourselves, but for future generations.
For us, ancient superstitions are not just myths – they are a way of understanding, appreciating and living together with nature and culture. This provides meaning, a sense of identity and joy.
Welcome to the mountains – the realm of Skade.
