The horse release in Sikkilsdalen
Spring arrives in the mountains, quietly, and almost unnoticed. But in Sikkilsdalen, there is one moment that brings everything to life.
You see, it is not only the royal family that loves Sikkilsdalen. The horse release in June is a magical experience that makes one's heart overflow with joy. Horses are so infinitely beautiful! With manes held high, they gallop out into the valley with powerful strides, as if powered by all the longing of winter. It's raw, real and infinitely beautiful.
Ever since 1868, people have brought their horses up here to the lush pastures between the mountains at the end of June. Generations before us have stood in the same spot, felt the same excitement, and seen the same sight: the barn doors that open, and the horses that are released.
It's not just a beautiful moment – it's a living tradition. A part of Norwegian history, and the very beginning of the official horse breeding season in the country. Every summer, stallions and mares meet here, and are allowed to live freely in the mountains throughout the season - as nature itself intended.
For many locals, and horse lovers from all over the country, it's more than just an event. It's a reunion. A meeting point. A place where stories are shared, memories are awakened, and new ones are made. The sound of hooves against the ground, laughter along the fence, and the feeling of being part of something that has lasted for over 150 years.
The experience is open to everyone. You can stand there yourself, feel your pulse race as the herds meet, and witness something real and unchanged.
As night falls over the valley, and the calm settles between the mountains, it is easy to understand why people come back, year after year.
Maybe it's to do with the freedom.
Maybe it's the nature.
Or maybe it's just the feeling of being exactly where you're supposed to be.
Maybe it's quite simply a bucket list experience:-)
